How to Use Non-Woven Abrasive Belts: A Complete Industrial Guide

Non-woven abrasive belts are an essential tool in industrial metal finishing, providing consistent surface conditioning, deburring, and polishing. They are widely used in strip metal production, coil lines, and precision manufacturing for both ferrous and non-ferrous metals.

What Are Non-Woven Abrasive Belts?

Non-woven abrasive belts are made from open-web fibers embedded with abrasive grains, offering a uniform abrasive surface that is flexible, conformable, and long-lasting.

Key characteristics include:

Soft, non-woven construction for controlled finishing

Suitable for deburring, polishing, and surface conditioning

Works on flat or contoured surfaces without damaging edges

Clean and Maintain the Belt

Remove metal dust and debris from the belt periodically to prevent clogging.

Replace the belt when worn or if abrasive grains are no longer effective.

Why Copper Strips Matter

Copper strips are thin, elongated forms of copper widely used in electrical, architectural, automotive, and electronics industries. Their exceptional electrical and thermal conductivity, paired with malleability, makes them ideal for actions like forming, strip processing, and precision finishing.IQS Directory

Manufacturing typically involves combustion or induction melting, followed by laboratory testing, hot rolling, cutting, and surface finishing to ensure strict dimensional and surface standards.copper-brass-bronze.com

Be aware of the process taking place inside your machine.

In our first bristle brush pro-tip, we demonstrated the importance of making sure to engage the tip of a bristle brush with a strip surface. This content piggybacks on the concept of bristle tip engagement and will bring you value from understanding how to get the best possible cleaning & finishing out of your bristle brush.

Let’s say your new bristle brush has arrived and has been installed in your brush machine. But once the cleaning process is initiated, a change occurs, and that is the effect of temperature on the strip and/or the coolant. This is particularly important if the bristle brush is operating in an alkali solution.

The behavior of a bristle filament on a brush is much like that of opening up a box of spaghetti and pulling out one stick of spaghetti. It is fairly solid and straight. But when I suspend it in a pot of hot water, that once rigid stick of spaghetti turns into a mush noodle. This is what happens to a bristle brush operating in a 140 + degree environment.

The environment a bristle brush is in, affects how the filament tip engages onto the surface of the strip. If the only variable you changed in your brush machine is temperature, you would see a huge difference in the cleanliness of the strip. We call this the spaghetti effect. Knowing that this is happening inside your brush machine is half the battle.

Potential Bristle “Spaghetti Effect” Issues

– Bristle Tip to Strip Surface Engagement. This is where the work is being done. With a limp bristle there is a chance that the bristle is hitting the strip surface on its side; thus no abrasive action is happening

– Bristle Control – The bristle may have lost partial stiffness and is now moving in a circular motion when it hits the strip surface. This will cause an irregular pattern

– Brush Being Crushed. If your load controller on your brush machine is seeking a certain kW value that is created from the friction of the brush on strip, there is a potential that your brush can be crushed. The filament loses its stiffness when heat is added to the process. If you calibrated the machine and process without the process heat present, your machine could be crushing the brush into the back up roll, as it is searching for the load point.

– Bristle Fall Out from the Brush – If you have to clean out your filter system too frequently and find bristles, this may be the cause.

APT SCALE-EATER FILAMENTS

Each bristle is the combination of synthetic filaments grouped in a core, covered with micro-filaments and bonded with special resins. The process allows the production of a great variety of bristles with or without abrasive charge, with a specific design for each application. This increases the cleaning capacity and the lifetime of the brush.

More accurate brushing:

The micro-filaments cover and reach all parts of the steel sheet. The cleaning capacity and oil and steel particle removing improve by up to 50% in comparison to conventional bristles.

More energetic brushing:

The grouped bristles with bonded multi-filaments transfer a greater impact strength to the edge of the bristle and grind off capacity increases by up to 50%.

Long brush life:

The grouped bristles with bonded multi-filaments wear out slower and more uniformly, increasing the lifetime of the brushes between 25% and 100% depending on the application.

The reason your strip isn’t clean. (You don’t need more pressure.)

Did you ever take a look at your finished metal strip surface and throw your hands up because you can’t figure out why it’s not getting all the dirt, smut, and iron fines off the surface?

You probably thought there was something wrong with the machine or that it was time to adjust the brush machine parameters? Or could it be an issue with the brush?

It could be the load, but more than likely it’s the industrial scrubber brush. If your strip isn’t getting clean, the brush in the machine probably isn’t the best one for the job.

Those of us who have been in the business for years remember when we had only a few options for brushes.

But today we have hundreds to choose from.

There’s no reason for strip to come out with dirt, iron fines or smut.

Most of the problems we see don’t have anything to do with the machine—and it’s not a problem with load. It’s the brush.

Take a look at our bristle brush selection on our website to get an idea of your choices.

Even easier is to give us a call to discuss your application, parameters, current issues, and what your manufacturing goals are, and we can talk about how to get cleaner strip faster just by changing the brush.

How to replace your metal strip surface cleaning section scrubber brushes, without damaging them.

Well, APT actually has figured out a way, but many metal strip and coil producing foundries still change the large heavy-duty industrial scrubber brushes the old way, which puts them at risk for bending the shaft or damaging the bearing blocks and/or journal ends.

Once the scrubber brush shaft is bent, maintaining a consistent uniform metal strip surface in the process line cleaning section by removing grease, iron fines, dirt, oil, and smut from the strip surface will be a huge challenge.

The brush extraction process developed years ago uses the factory overhead crane to remove the old scrubber brush, shaft, and bearing blocks and to lower the new scrubber brush into place. But you can see from this video that when the crane removes its support on the shaft side not supported by the brush machine, 5000+ pounds of weight are placed on only 5″ of the shaft!

That’s too much pressure. So the shaft has a tendency to bend, leaving you with issues to repair with the bearings, seals, and journal.

Straightening out a heavy-duty shaft requires so serious machinery and not that many people have gotten really good at repairing this, but there’s no way to get back the time and resources it takes to fix the problem.

The best thing to do is AVOID the problem in the first place. And that’s where Atlantech Process can help.

At APT, our first priority is improving your strip cleaning section brush machine processes. We want to optimize your line so your customers are happy and your competition is not.

Our quick brush-change process lets you replace a wide-face, 2-ton industrial scrubber brush in under 15 minutes. You need only one person to do it AND there’s no risk of bending the shaft.

Look at this video to see what I’m talking about. Remember when it used to take almost the whole day and two people to change a brush of this size? Not anymore ….

Advancements in design and material have really changed the game. And we want you to get the benefits of APT’s innovative brushes and machines.

We’ll even show you how to save money on buying, using, and disposing of chemicals so you can afford a new brush machine by reducing your operating costs.

.

Imagine how your productivity and outcomes will improve with a new machine!

Stop wasting time with frequent and repetitive maintenance work that is holding you back.

Atlantech Process Technology, Inc. saves customers money and time by delivering an abrasive process solution for flat metal strip producers.

CLEANING SECTION BRUSH SCRUBBERS

AND SURFACE CLEANING & FINISHING

This is a subject that many users would like to forget, rather than be reminded of!

Having built cleaning section equipment for over 60 years, we have looked at many process lines and listened to scrubber issues from maintenance, operations, and quality team members and have taken a fresh approach at what a brush scrubber should do.

Here are the top items:

Grooving of brush from different strip width – a need for in-process dressing

Variable brush configuration for required task

Less maintenance, more control and feedback

Longer life brushes and fast (less than 30min) brush changes

Our task is to integrate the best machine with the best brush type for optimum results.

We have designed two types of metal strip cleaning section brush machine scrubbers:

HEAVY-DUTY MILL APPLICATIONS – 35” Strip and Wider

MEDIUM DUTY FOR SERVICE CENTER INCLINE APPLICATIONS: 35” Strip & Narrower

The brush machines matched with the optimum scrubber brush will mechanically remove all the surface iron fines, smut, and oxides.

What to do about the residual oil and emulsion on the strip surface?

Traditionally alkali chemical concentrations have been used in the brush machine and as spray/dip pre-cleaners. This means that the alkali solution certain reoccurring overhead cost with the purchase, use, and disposal of the chemicals.

With our CHEMICAL FREE, Hot water – High-Pressure Precleaner and closed-loop filtration technology, we can remove approximately 85 – 90% of the surface oils. If this is not satisfactory for your application process, then alkali can be added to the following brush machine. Removing all that surface oil before the strip enters the alkali brush section, means that you will be able to use each batch much longer, reducing the overhead cost associated with the chemical process.

FILTRATION SYSTEM

Everyone that has worked closely with the cleaning section know that filtration is usually a huge issue. Most of the systems we have seen on lines today are struggling with filtration issues. APT-Wesero has put much focus into our filtration systems. We have to be really good at getting the unwanted surface contaminants off, as well as, really good at keeping them off. Filtration is the key to keeping the oils and iron fines out of the cleaning section process.

In summary, we should talk should your cleaning section need a modular upgrade or replacing, and a requirement for a cleaning strip surface.

Thanks in advance for the opportunity!

The post Re-think Brushing – Brush Scrubbers and Satin Finishing first appeared on APT.

FOR FLAT METAL STRIP, COIL, SHEET APPLICATIONS

Today’s customers want to increase cleaning and line speed in existing (or new!) cleaning equipment. And the problem is conventional cleaning sections/lines have mechanical limitations.

Current line configurations don’t have free space to add new degreasing, electrolytic or brushing units, and line modification costs are very high.

APT developed a solution to increase your process line’s surface cleaning performance, using cleaning section scrubber brush rolls filled with APT Multi-filament bristles.

Both abrasive and non-abrasive filaments

The wide-face scrubber brushes used today in the cleaning section are the same brushes used 30 years ago.

APT’s new-generation APT Multi-filament is engineered by wrapping multiple extruded, synthetic filaments into a “single” bristle and coating them to ensure maximum stability, longer brush life, and cleaner strip.

These abrasive cleaning section scrubber brushes radically improve the speed and effectiveness of the cleaning strip.

What if—without changing any configuration in your machine— and without adding anything to the degreasing or brushing section, you could get a more consistent annealing and galvanized coating on your metallic coils?

What if all it took was a new brush?

No huge expense.

No new equipment.

No reconfiguration that requires more space.

APT Multi-filament brushes clean better.

They last longer.

They work faster.

No more frustration because the brush softens from the heat, breaks down from chemicals, and leaves a print on the surface instead of removing the grease and debris.

We’ve seen so many benefits from APT Multi-filament brushes:

They can be used with any existing machine without modifications.

They can be installed with a hammer and a knocking bar.

Within 30 minutes, a APT Multi-filament brush can be up and running in your current machine.

Special jobs are no problem because the material in the APT Multi-filament brush is manufactured for maximum performance.

The bristles hold up better to chemicals and heat.

APT Multi-filament brushes descale faster and leave metal surfaces smoother.

APT Multi-filament brushes are engineered to your application, properly designed

using brush filament specifications and parameters for your process and application.

Strip comes out cleaner, faster than ever before.

Finally, it’s possible for you to get dramatic improvements in your cleaning section with little investment.

REDUCE BREAKAGE

EXTEND BRUSH LIFE

CLEAN STRIP BETTER

MAXIMIZE SURFACE CONTACT

INCREASE GRINDING CAPACITY

OPTIMIZE BRUSHING FORCE

OPTIMIZE CLEANING SECTION

RESISTANT TO CHEMICALS

FOR ABRASIVE AND NON-ABRASIVE CLEANING AND FINISHING FLAT METAL STRIP, COIL, SHEET APPLICATIONS

Wide face brushes built using single filament just don’t have the cleaning power needed to meet today’s quality demands.

That’s because single filament brushes have the abrasive applied only at the tip of the bristle. When the bristles get compressed more than 3mm, they collapse, and the sides of the bristle come into contact with the surface of the strip.

There is no abrasive grit in the side wall of the bristle filament, only on the tip. The traditional bristle filament can not remove iron fines, oxides, scale, dirt, debris; when they are folded over on the side

There is no abrasive grit in the side wall of the bristle filament, only on the tip.

The traditional bristle filament can not remove iron fines, oxides, scale, dirt, debris; when they are folded over on the side. The strip isn’t clean, and the life of the brush is shortened dramatically.

APT Multi-filament brushes solve the problem with durable bristles engineered using multiple lines of filament.

The Magic is in the Bristle

MULTIFIL brushes are made from thousands of strands of microfilament. Conventional bristles use a single type of filament. And here’s another important difference: the bristles in a conventional brush are crimped, which is great for improving the distribution of the brushes, but it reduces the force the brush is able to handle. And we all know what happens next: the brush doesn’t clean as well, so we compensate by increasing the load. This crushes the bristles more, and make them completely ineffective. They can’t clean when they are crushed.

But each bristle in a multifil brush is made of thousands of pieces of microfilament carefully chosen for the required job. Those strands of microfilaments are wrapped together with a synthetic casing, which strengthens the bristles so they can retain their shape longer. They hold up to pressure better. And they don’t fatigue as quickly under heat.

You see the difference?

These are not loose bristles scraping the surface of the metal and increasing the possibility of leaving marks on the sheet. Firm, supported, confined bristles make unified contact with the surface. The result is obvious: debris is removed consistently leaving a smoother, cleaner finish.

It’s a game-changer.

If you haven’t already, take a look at our Multifil brochures so you can get a better idea of the types of brushes available. It’s definitely worth the investment to add Multifil brushes to your line.
